THE ARTIST

The artist was born in New York in 1917. Known as one of the most important contemporary sculptors who works with the human figure, Milton Hebald learned art literally in the streets of that city, drawing on sidewalks in colored chalk. He began sculpting when, as still a child, someone gave him a box of modeling clay. At the age of ten, he was the youngest student ever to attend the Art Students League. After continuing his studies at the National Academy of Design and the Beaux-Arts Institute he had his first one man show when he was only twenty.

In 1955 he was awarded the prestigious "Prix de Rome" fellowship to the American Academy in Rome. After receiving the "Prix de Rome" twice again, he decided to make Rome his permanent home.

A prolific artist, Hebald's bronzes and wood sculptures range from light-hearted commentaries upon the social scene to personal interpretation of mythological figures and, most importantly, to capturing the human figure's movement celebrating life; his work speaks of an energy and vision which are unmoved by artistic fads or the critic's pen.

Hebald's works are in numerous private collections and public locations worldwide: The Zodiac bronzes in JFKennedy International Airport; the James Joyce Memorial in Zurich, Switzerland; Shakespeare's Mirror in Oslo, Norway;the Starr Memorial in Tokyo, Japan;Romeo and Juliet in Central Park, NYC. Also, on the shores of Lake Bracciano, home of this Website, in the town of Trevignano Romano there is a large bronze group,"The Family", holding hands and dancing in a circle.

Of his work, Hebald has said:"I always want to express human relations, human endeavors. I am certain that in fifty or even a hundred years from now people will be able to relate to my works. We will not have changed that much...little boys will still be doing handstands!"

L'artista è nato à New York, nel 1917. Conosciuto come uno degli scultori contemporanei più important nella rappresentazione della figura human, Milton Hebald apprende l'arte letteralmente nelle strade di New York, disegnando sui marciapiedi con i gessi colorati. Ha trovato il suo vero interesse nella vita quando qualcuno gli ha regalalto una scatola di creta da modellazione. A l'età di dieci anni, diventa il più giovane studente che ebbi mai frequentato l'Art Students League. Dopo aver frequentato la National Academy of Design e la Beaux Arts Institute, ha esposto per la prima volta, in una sua personale, all'età di 20 anni.

Nel 1955 ha ricevuto il prestigioso "Prix de Rome" all'Academy Americana di Roma. Dopo questo premio, vinto altre due volte, decide a stabilirsi a Roma.

Hebald, nel suo lavoro di scultura in bronzo e legno, è stato sempre un artista prolifico. Le sue sculture variano, nel soggetto, dalla rappresentazione gioiso della scena sociale alle interpretazionei delle figura mitologiche, ma l'elemento più importante è il movimento della figura umana mentre celebre la vita. Il suo lavoro si esprime con una energia e visione che esula dalle trovate artistica e critiche

Il lavoro di Hebald si trova nelle collezioni privati e pubbliche in tutto il mondo: Il bronzo Zodiacale per il J. F. Kennedy International Airport, New York; il memorial à James Joyce in Zurico, Svizzera; Shakespeare's Mirror in Oslo, Norvegia, Starr Memorial in Tokyo, Japan; Romeo e Juliet in Central Park, NYC. Anche qui in Trevignano Romano, sul Lago di Bracciano, c'è un gruppo grande in bronzo, "La Famiglia".


Hebald ha detto, parlando dei sui lavori, "Ho sempre desiderato rappresentare le relazioni humane. Sono sicuro che fra cinquanta o cento anni da ora le persone percepiranno ancora il senso del mio lavoro - i giovani continuerrano di giocare con la testa in giù!"
